Geek Squad Expanding Into Competitive Gaming

Status: Tell Us More
by on ‎05-16-2014 10:07 PM

It has been made clear that Best Buy wishes to expand the Geek Squad name to be more globally recognized and to utilize the brand for increased profits.

I believe Best Buy/Geek Squad is missing out on an opportunity to get into the competitive gaming scene. Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends is pioneering the world of competitive gaming and legitimizing it as a real sport. The United States government already recognizes it as a legitimate sport, providing travel visas for professional players.

Best Buy/Geek Squad should invest in sponsoring a professional team and/or creating an official Geek Sqaud team to put the face of Geek Squad in the competitive gaming scene. Not only would this give an incredible boost for advertisement and marketing but Geek Squad would have the potential to developer their own brand of PC Gaming gear to be sold.

In case you aren't aware of what League of Legends is, you can visit their official site at http://leagueoflegends.com/ and you can visit the League of Legends professional gaming site at http://lolesports.com.

Just to give you an idea of how big the competitive scene is for gaming, League of Legends sold out the Staples Center in California for the World Championships with a prize pool of over 1 million dollars. With thousands viewing the event live and hundreds of thousands viewing it via online streaming at lolesports.com.

If any company higherup wishes to discuss this further in a serious matter, I encourage you to email me back.

Thanks for your time.

-Jeff

Intriguing suggestion. Would anyone else like to see us sponsor a competitive gaming team? Why Geek Squad instead of Best Buy? Remember to vote for an idea if you like it.

It seems like a nice idea it's a shame those faithful forum users of BB couldn't be on the team Smiley Wink

but no seriously I think this is a pretty sweet idea I just fear it may not get the attention it may or may not deserve vote wise.

I apologize for the late response, Allan.

Geek Squad is more relatable by gamers. The brand, the look and even the outfit could be something that is globally recognized and respected in the gaming world. People who are not only knowledgable with computers but also knowledgable about gaming, gaming equipment and machines. Most Geek Squad agents in my store are hardcore gamers as it is.

I feel actually putting Best Buy brand on a team it wouldn't be as well received as it would with the Geek Squad logo. I feel it would be along the same lines as if the Wal-Mart logo was on the jerseys of a team, it just wouldn't feel or look right and the gamers wouldn't really relate or think twice about it.

Also, on a side note. I think the development of official Geek Squad Gaming Gear would be pretty easy to market. I'm talking headsets, mice, keyboards and mouse pads all with the Geek Squad logo. You could pitch something similar "Designed by Geekiest Gamers" or "designed my gamers, for gamers."

@Jeffreh

Sorry for late reply, I don't view old ideas that often compared to actual board forums.

While I can see Geek Squad gaming gear, you have to realize that BestBuy isn't a manufacturing plant. They won't make their own products but pay a company such as Dell or Razer to make the product but imprint the Geek Squad logo on the product. And I would hate to fathom what type of extra price there would be for the product just for the simple addition of an image....

(it's like buying "battlefield 4" headsets...pay an extra $10-15 just for a design no thanks.

@AWBrown

It was merely a suggestion. I don't know enough about what Best Buy has as far as infastructure for an idea like this.

I just wanted to bring attention to competitive gaming and see if Best Buy is interested in any of it.
