Extend Automatic Pre-order Price Match to Release Day

Currently, if the price on a pre-order drops between the time a customer places an order and the time it ships, the customer automatically pays the lowest price.  This policy should be adjusted so that the automatic adjustment period extends to the release day of the item.

To ensure the item reaches the customer on release day, it typically ships late during the week before release.  The sale price isn't always updated on the website until the release week, after the order has shipped.  This can cause customers who pre-ordered to not get the best price unless they call in and ask for a manual adjustment, which is covered.

A customer who pre-orders an item should be guaranteed to get the same price as a customer who walks into a store on release day and buys the same item.

I hear where you are coming from on this, but from what I understand we are not changing our Price Match Guarantee at this point.

I disagree.  Price match should never be automatic.  If you want it you should need to ask for it.

From a business point of view it does not make any sense to give away profits for free.

Take this step and then people would want it automatic on regular in store purchases.  If you want the money back you should need to keep your eye on prices and watch for it.

Is there a particular game you have seen drop in price before it was released?

I agree that price matching should not be automatic after the sale.

However, I see things differently for pre-orders, as do many other retailers, including Best Buy.  From the time you place the order until the time the order ships, if the price drops, Best Buy will charge you the lowest price.  Amazon extends this past shipping to the release day of the item, which is what I'm proposing for Best Buy.

You mention people would want this automatically for in store purchase - they already get it automatically.  If you pre-order and item online with in store pickup, if it's lower when you pick it up (release day), you will automatically be charged the lower amount.  If you pre-order an item in store with a deposit, you pay the release day amount, less whatever amount you deposited.

A specific example was The Walking Dead Season 5.  At the time I pre-ordered it, it was around $50.  It dropped several times over the next few weeks until it was at $35 the Friday before release, when it shipped in order to arrive on release day.  Due to Best Buy's automatic pre-order adjustment policy, I paid $35.  Sunday, the price was updated to $30, per the weekly ad.  The item released on Tuesday for $30 in stores and online.  If I would have selected in store pickup, I would have paid $30.  AFAIK, Best Buy doesn't offer in store pre-orders on movies, but if I would have walked in the store on Tuesday, I would have paid $30.  If I hadn't selected release day shipping, it's possible it wouldn't have shipped early and, assuming it shipped Sunday or later, I would have paid $30.  But since the item shipped early and they hadn't updated their website to the sale price, I paid more.

I know its not ideal but, you can always go in  the store with your receipt and get the 5 bucks back. If Best Buy changes the price within their 15 day return policy they will usually price match it and give you a refund. Because if not just return it and rebuy it for cheaper. Like I said not a great way to fix things but might be the only way since BB doesnt seem to be to good with Technology I mean have you seen their POS (point of sale) systems
