Offer a thing where if you give a DVD and $5, BestBuy will exchange your DVD for a Blu Ray version.

Sounds a lot like our Upgrade and Save offer we have going on sometimes, but different at the same time. Would anyone else like to see us run a promotion like this? Remember to vote for an idea if you like it.

The price seems off honestly how is BestBuy still going to make the normal profit from this? A DVD already only costs like $4-7 normally while a blue ray can be $20-40 normally.

Scratch it as a just a promo & refine it as a perk/benefit of something bigger. Either an "upgrade your collection" event or move forward with movie club akin to GCU. Use the same template as GCU with a much lower upfront cost it`ll strengthen the entire media area. And the added revenue can be used to spur enticing sales & more unique promos. http://forums.bestbuy.com/t5/Best-Buy-IdeaX/New-BestBuy-MMM-club-Movies-Music-Media/idi-p/540236

Really?  Can you give me an example of a similar title?  In this example... it's only a few dollars.

I have actually made the personal choice that I won't spend a bunch of money upgrading DVD's to Bluray now that I have one, but I would upgrade a lot of my movies for a deal like this.  The real key would be movie studio support. They want to move Bluray disc and get people to abandon DVD then they would want to help encourage doing so. I have to imagine plenty of studios would be interested in partnering up (and if enough do then hopefully others would be encouraged to do so).

The piles of used DVD's could probably be sold off to bulk distibutors as well, so they wouldn't be a total wash for Best Buy.
