Compact USB multiport for laptops

I recently searched for and purchased a USB multiport for my laptop but was disappointed that I could not find one that attached directly to my laptop port without a cable.  The cable allows the multliport to 'dangle', risking damage or loss.  Can you build one that is compact, has three or four ports to the outside, a single male extension on one side to 'mate' snugly with my laptop?  Adjustable clips to keep it securely fastened would be very important...even velcro attachments might work.

That's my idea, I hope someone can develop it!  (I have a Google Sketchup drawing but was't able to insert it.)

Thank you, John L. {removed per forum guidelines}

I believe you are referring to a USB hub, that connects to a USB port on a computing device, allowing multiple USB cables to be inputted into one USB input on this device.

I have to admit I was surprised when I couldn't find one matching your description on If anyone is aware of a device that matches this description let us know. I could personally see the usefulness of such a hub, but would like to hear if other people could see the value in developing this product.

Huh.... I found hubs...

Personally I don't use them.... they take up space, make it difficult to "safe removal" and weaken the voltage if I need it for external hard drives.  My laptop has 4 ports which I fill with cooler, tv tuner, external speakers and a spare one I use for card reader.  My mouse is bluetooth and my printer is wireless.

With regards to the cable... I prefer having a cable.  The weight of some USB devices can damage port, especially if the hub or attached device is accidentally knocked.

Know what you're talking about, but won't find any on  I'm sure there are some out there...we just don't carry any of them.  The design is great, but what xl brings up is a good point.  Unless it's light enough, it might damage the ports.

Go to Kickstarter and get it funded and developed then come back to Best Buy and sell it to them!
