I'm aware that a while back Best Buy started a program where stores can fulfill and ship customer orders versus a customer having to wait to get it from a warehouse and I've actually received a few items that were shipped this way. This is a great idea! To make a great idea even greater - Best Buy should do this with open box and clearance. Currenty they are displayed on BestBuy.com but they show a grayed out "In-Store Only" on most big ticket items. I think this would be a logical move on Best Buy's part and a win-win for customers as it would help Best Buy reduce open box inventory and it would save customers time - i.e. I could drive an hour for a great deal but how much greater would the customer experience be if Best Buy shipped it to my front door? Just a thought.
My only concern is this, if you don't know the actual condition from looking at it in store then you have no guarantee it will work when it arrives.
I.e. let's say you buy a $1,000 refurbished geek certified computer that is an open box. Sure it says it's works but when it ships there is an issue and it doesn't work for whatever reason. To my knowledge, due to the way open box materials work there would be no warranty on it that could assist you?
AWBrown, I understand your concern completely and I remind you, that you would have the full return policy (on most items at least 15 days - more depending on your RZ status) to test drive the item and return it if it were not right for you.
Best Buy also states on their open box website that all open box items come with a standard manufacturer's warranty and you would be able to (similar to a new in box item) add the Geek Squad Protection, I imagine, online.
Another added bonus to doing this is for customers, it creates value. For instance, I use my Discover card for shopping online so I can get 5% cash back; that means on top of the open item discount, I could get another 5% back from Discover from buying online. Let's be honest, if you look at a laptop (for instance I'm in the market for a new Mac), the average discount is 9% thru Best Buy versus 15% at Apple; this closes that gap.
I would also like to see this implemented. There is a prosumer camcorder that I have been eyeballing with ferocity for months, but I can only afford it at the open-box price and there are no open-box items within 250 miles of me. The lack of this option has made the difference between me spending $1300 at Best Buy and me spending the current amount which is $0. Even if the option was only to ship it from Best Buy X to one near me, that'd be sufficient. Please make this happen ASAP.
