When you first grab the controller you’ll be surprised by the weight, size and diamond rubber grips. The controller feels high quality and solid. Most controllers are transitioning to more light weight and smaller, but it was refreshing to have a controller that felt sturdy and reliable. The overall look of the controller is similar to Xbox One’s standard layout and you’ll feel right at home navigating the buttons. When you’ve decide to customize the controller to your own unique style that’s when the controller goes from being good to elite!
You can adjust almost everything about the controller. You can alter the button layout by reassigning button configuration to one of the four new paddles to best fit your gaming style. For instance, I’ve always had issues with L3 and R3 on controller, and the paddles were a great substitute to pushing the thumbstick. It wasn’t until I added the paddles on the back that I realized how beneficial this really was; you can jump and crouch and dive without interrupting the flow of your movement.
In Mass Effect Andromeda, I found my ability to fire and move was seamless using the paddles. It was a game changer for gameplay where timing is crucial. After adjusting to the paddles, I changed out the three different stainless steel thumbstick lengths to get a feel for each size. It was amazing to have one stick at the highest point and the second at the lowest, which made the controller feel unique and different. I ended up playing with the medium size joysticks most of the time.
I decided I would really explore the hidden features of the controller so I adjusted the vibration of the controller, thumb stick sensitivity, and the brightness of the Xbox logo on the controller. It was really fun to see all the different configurations of this controller and experience gaming in an entirely new way. You’re allowed to have two different profiles loaded into the controller and switch between different gameplay styles on the fly.
Finally, the D-Pad was incredibly different with a more faceted approach then the traditional up, down, left, right we’ve grown accustomed to. I was so intrigued by it that when I wasn’t playing I spent more time looking at the D-Pad than I ever have on any other controller.
