It’s Back
In the fall of 2015, just in time for a new era in Star Wars movies, EA Games released Star Wars Battlefront. It had been a long time coming, but the wait was worth it. This was a solid game, and one that made great use of the next-gen computing power of our current gaming systems. And as good as that game was, this year’s Battlefront II looks to be even better.
New Campaign
I have always been a fan of single player campaigns, but this had been an area of opportunity for Star Wars Battlefront (2015). Star Wars Battlefront II (the original from 2005) had done a great job prefacing their single player missions with background and objectives that fit into battlefield we were about to land on. I remember fondly listening to the voiceovers from a stormtrooper in the “Fighting 501st” as we went from the secret weapon of the republic to the personal army of the emperor. Prior to this, I would never have empathized with these faceless, monochromatic enemies.
Because I had that experience I am very excited to hear the story we are getting in Battlefront II is told from the other side of the battle, and this time as a member of Inferno Squad, an elite forces team loyal to the emperor. The story picks up on the heels of the Empire’s defeat at Endor, and I’m personally very excited to see what happened around the galaxy in the intermittent time between the original trilogy and The Force Awakens. I hope we have many questions answered, such as why the Skywalker twins go in such different directions, and how the fall of the Empire gives way to the rise of the First Order. Just thinking about it makes me want to start playing this game today!
Heroes and Villains
One of my favorite aspects of the Star Wars Battlefront series is being able to play as my favorite characters from the movies. I feel a little more swagger when I take to the field as Han Solo, or more dignified as Luke. Despite my affinity toward the light side, however, I can’t help but revel in the experience of playing as Darth Vader and using my saber, as well as the dark side of the force, to take down any enemies in my path. Expect to see your favorites from the past as well as new characters such as Rey and Kylo Ren.
A Return to Space (Battles)
I feel like I could stop there and this game would be on my list of games to pre-order already, but I’m very glad to know that the EA team kept going. Honestly, part of why these were originally called “Star Wars” to begin with was the battles that happened in space! Returning in Star Wars Battlefront II is space battles. Captain the Millennium Falcon, or take the stick in Luke’s iconic X-Wing fighter. Space battles promise to be bigger than ever, and when the game releases in November we’ll be able to see how we rank in 24-player dogfights. Don’t be at all surprised if you find yourself coming back to the space battles again and again.
Star Wars Battlefront II blasts onto store shelves on November 3, 2017.
