All right Gamers, its confession time…

I’m not a huge fighter genre guy.  There, I said it.

I really haven’t been since the days of the Sega Genesis.  My favorite is still Super Punch Out for NES!  This isn’t to say that I haven’t played them since my childhood, or that I haven’t enjoyed them.  There are a lot of good fighters out there.

For me to want to invest in a game, though, I need a compelling story and unique characters.  It seems that now with the teaming of the creators of Mortal Kombat and DC Comics I will get both in Injustice: Gods Among US.  Did I mention I’m also a comic book guy?  Yeah, this game has what I’m looking for.  And yes, I know there has been Marvel vs. Capcom and even Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but let’s stay on topic.

Here’s the backdrop: in Injustice, we find the heroes and villains that we have loved (and loved to hate) in the DC universe placed in a dystopian future wholly separate from anything DC has shown us before.  The Joker took aim at the Man of Steel and cut him deeper than ever before.  The results are more direct and devastating than even the clown prince of crime could have imagined.

Having lost faith in humanity’s ability to come to peace on its own, Superman has declared martial law and become an international dictator.  Some heroes, and even villains, have chosen to align themselves with Superman.  Others have taken a stance in opposition to this new world order.  New lines are drawn and old enmities are put aside.  I know what you’re thinking – Epic!

But let’s get to focusing on gameplay.  The NetherRealm Studios team has put together a diverse collection of DC characters, both heroes and villains, mainstream and obscure.  Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Creative Director at NetherRealm studios, has said that characters will generally fall into one of two categories: Power Character or Gadget Character.  Great examples would be Superman as the ultimate power character and Batman as the resourceful gadget character.

In addition to using your particular fighting style and skill-set, players have the ability to interact with their environment, iconic locations from the DC universe.  Each is a multi-tiered arena with interactive environments.  Every punch you land has the potential to damage your surroundings, releasing useable objects such as bombs, or creating hazards like exposed electrical lines.  With compelling characters, immersive fight arenas, and a deep story narrative, you should be prepared to have Injustice: Gods Among Us dominate your free time for the foreseeable future upon its release.

Fight the Injustice 4/16/13.
