My Top Five Mario Moments.

5) Do you remember the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!? I can’t forget it. Those mustaches and accents will be forever etched into my brain. The show originally aired in 1989 and it featured both live-action and animated segments. Each episode also included a special guest.

4) I’m just an 8-bit girl living in a 16-bit world. Many of my friends met Mario for the first time on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). When I was first introduced to him when playing Donkey Kong on my family’s Atari 2600, he was known as Jump Man. Jump Man was renamed Mario with the release of Donkey Kong Jr.. Fun Fact: Before she was known as Princess Peach, Peach had a few different names, such as Lady, Pauline, and Princess Toadstool.

3) The One Where They Went To The Big Screen. The Super Mario Bros. movie hit theaters across America in 1993, but many who watched it opted to wait until it was available for home video. While many critics considered the movie a flop while it was in theaters, it’s gained a cult following and even had anniversary showings in select theaters in 2012 and 2013. I can only imagine what my parents thought of the movie when they saw it. I just remember thinking that it wasn’t the same as playing the game.

2) Is this the shortcut or the scenic route? The release of Super Mario Kart was a game-changer in my childhood home. It was the first game that I can remember playing a game with both of my siblings at the same time. After discovering the shortcut in the Ghost Valley I track, we spent countless hours searching off the main tracks for other hidden surprises.

1) Practice makes perfect. Since there were three of us, my siblings and I had to take turns when playing one or two-player games, like Super Mario All-Stars. This became a contentious subject when we would only have a limited time to play games that we rented at the local mom and pop video rental store. Whoever drew the short straw would watch and “practice” the moves they were seeing on the screen with a controller that was unplugged from the system. Did this really make us better at the games? The world will never know.
