Call of Duty WWII Private Beta Impressions
Call of Duty WWII

The Return:

Call of Duty is back baby! The beta married classic gameplay with modern graphics in an all-in-one package. Call of Duty WWII has learned from its predecessors that wall running futuristic shooters are no longer what the community yearns for. Gameplay has been simplified and is more accessible than ever. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a COD title in recent years, and I couldn’t put the controller down.

Divisions Thoughts:

The new Divisions mechanic announced at E3 is fully highlighted in this early access beta truly showing this main feature of the multiplayer experience. Each of the 5 divisions has a certain set of “skills” that replaced perks and allow for the player to truly customize his/her experience. Each division centers on a certain style of play and reflects that style in their avatars’ appearance. Unfortunately customization has been heavily limited in the beta, but will be shown off as the game gets closer to release. I personally chose the Infantry division due to its universal appeal as an all-encompassing and strong entry point. The Infantry division fit perfectly with my initial style of play and allowed me to progress comfortably during my first hours with the game. All in all, the Divisions mechanic is a welcome breath of fresh air in a maturing franchise, and I look forward to trying the other divisions later on!

War Completes Me:

The new War mode in its current rendition fits perfectly within this new installment of Call of Duty. For those who have played the escort missions in Overwatch you’ll be right at home as this mode takes a lot of inspiration from that game style. The atmospheric ambience and background scenery adds to the objective completion giving you a rush of adrenaline as you defend or successfully attack objectives. Not to mention escorting a tank in Operation Breakout was executed perfectly. I am hoping that the other War mode maps bring to the table the same amount jam-packed action as Operation Breakout did for me.

Overall Impression:

The maps shown off in the first round of the beta were phenomenal. Not only were they aesthetically pleasing, but they fit perfectly with the game modes in the beta. The gunplay was tight and I had a rush of nostalgia as I fought once again with M1 Garand’s & Trench Guns. The beta sold me on the return of Call of Duty and weekend two should cement that thought completely.
