BioShock Infinite

Bright colors and clear sunny skies belie the terror that awaits you in Columbia, the sky city that plays host to the events of BioShock Infinite, the upcoming title from 2K Games and Irrational Games.

Fans of the franchise will be long removed from the events of the previous installments.  Claustrophobic depths have been replaced with vertigo-inducing heights.  The events take place in the year 1912, and unlike Rapture, which was secretly created in the 1950’s as one man’s ideal paradise; Columbia was built and funded by the US government as a testament to American Exceptionalism.  Over the past decade it has gone from beautiful and idyllic to sinister and dystopian.

bioshock4.jpgYears of isolation have not been good on Columbia.  You enter the city as Booker DeWitt, a disgraced former Pinkerton agent, hired with the purpose of finding and bringing home Elizabeth, a girl kidnapped and imprisoned in the city 12 years earlier.  In your quest to find her, you also find Vigors, super-human powers that will assist you in your quest.  After finding Elizabeth, she becomes your ally as you make your way through the city.  Elizabeth has powers of her own, chief among them the ability to manipulate tears in time and space, sometimes creating anachronistic elements within your surroundings, and others assisting you in defeating nearby enemies.

The creators of BioShock Infinite have given players a unique and intimate, and also intense and graphic, look at humanity.  Questions of morality are presented, with your decisions resulting in different in-game experiences.  Can you empathize with the tragic pasts of those bent on destroying you?  Will you save the life of an innocent?  What are you willing to risk for someone you care about?  What is the true cost of freedom?

BioShock Infinite takes flight 3/26/13.
