It’s a new year!  I’ve been working on compiling a list of my favorite games from 2015.  It was an amazing year for the video game industry.  We’ve seen some great franchises continued and some completely new ideas come to life.  I’ve spent the majority of my year on the PlayStation 4.  You’ll notice that most of the games on the list are from that console.  Here are my favorite games of 2015.

Madden NFL 16

As a huge Madden fan and NFL diehard, I had to place this on my list.  There were so many open-world games this year that it was nice to just pickup the controller and throw around the football.  The gameplay has been improved and the visual representation of my favorite game can’t be matched.

NBA 2k16

I’m always impressed with the presentation style of the 2k series.  This year didn’t disappoint.  NBA 2k16 understands what it means to bring your favorite personalities to the court and added some flare off the court with a new trio of pre-game commentators.  Also, the Spike Lee directed storyline was compelling enough and added a new element to sports video games.

Until Dawn

I was surprised by this pick too!  It really caught me off guard, but this was one of the more pleasant revelations of the year.  I found this choose-your-own-adventure horror based game really gave me what I was looking for from this year.  The cliché characters and storyline were a welcome callback to some of my favorite movies and the quick decision making gameplay made me feel like I had to be on my toes.

Dying Light

The year of the zombies continued in this open-world survival game.   I spent the majority of my time sprinting through the dead of night while zombies chased me down.   This world was sprawling and when you thought you’d seen it all you’d climb into a completely new area filled with the undead.   One of the most underrated games of the year.

Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection

It’s time to get ready for the conclusion of the Nathan Drake series by reliving some of your favorite moments from the past.  I had forgotten how many memories I had from this series.  I was astonished by the visual set pieces and compelling character development.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Having played all of the Metal Gear Solid games, this was a no brainer.  I embraced the open-world experience and nonlinear storyline.  Each action and movement is unique to your own personal style.  You can go in guns blazing or sneak around waiting for the perfect moment.  This world was expansive and kept me wanting to come back to try something completely new.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This was one of the more controversial games that I played.  I found that there were people that loved this game and would fight to the death to defend its honor.  Then there were others that just thought it was okay.  I personally thought this game was amazing and captured all aspects of what you want from a video game.  It captured the beauty of open-world exploration and fluidity between storytelling and gameplay.  The majority of people would agree that the Witcher 3 changed our expectations for video games in the future.

Fallout 4

Finally!  I’ve been waiting a long time for this game and it didn’t disappoint.  I was brought back to what I loved about the series.  The gloom of a world that has been destroyed and now you wander trying to pick up the pieces.  You step out of the vault and start exploring an environment full of interesting characters, beloved companions and hoarding!  You’ll find that you need to store every little item.  “I need that old book!”  This is one you’ll continue to replay over and over again.

I’ve played all the previous games (Demon Souls, Dark Souls, etc….) and they never grabbed me like Bloodborne.  Bloodborne was easily my most played and favorite game of the year. I spent more time knocking on doors to hear people chit-chatting than I’d like to admit.  I still sit here looking at my Platinum trophy and wonder why I was so compelled to master this game.  There’s something so frustrating and beautiful about this game that you have to keep fighting!  Just when I had enough and couldn’t go on anymore, I would return and feel the glory of victory.  I can honestly say there are few moments in life that feel as good as defeating a boss after losing over and over again.

That’s my list!  What were your favorite games of 2015?  What game keeps you coming back for more?   Let us know on the “What are you playing?” thread and I look forward to seeing what adventures await in 2016.
