Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches December 7, 2018

We’re just over a month away from the launch of the next installment of one of Nintendo’s most popular game series – Super Smash Bros.  Years before Avengers Infinity War billed itself as the greatest crossover event ever, Nintendo had their own massive crossover game in the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64. That game brought together many of the most popular Nintendo characters in a fast-paced fighting game.

That series has continued over the years, and the cast of characters has grown. Even characters from companies other than Nintendo have been added, such as Ryu from Street Fighter, Sonic The Hedgehog, Snake from Metal Gear and Mega Man. Coming soon we have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, for the Nintendo Switch. This game brings back every character from each previous Smash Bros. game, and a set of new characters.

If you aren’t familiar with Smash, now is a great time to jump in. If you don’t already have a Nintendo Switch, you can pick up a limited edition Smash Bros. themed console. Like all special edition consoles, however, it is selling quickly, so be sure to jump in as soon as it’s available for sale. Even if you miss out on the limited console you can pick up a standard Switch here.

You won’t want to stop at just the console, however. The absolute best way to play Smash is with a GameCube Controller. I know that a controller from a console released in 2001 may not seem like an ideal way to play, but no controller has ever felt as comfortable. You’ll need a GameCube Controller Adapter to get it to work with your Switch as well.  One adapter is good for up to four controllers. Don’t worry, all of your old GameCube controllers will still work. If you have a WiiU GameCube Controller Adapter, it will work on the Switch as well.

If you aren’t in the mood for a GameCube controller you can instead pick up a Pro Wireless Controller. They are available as a Smash Bros themed version, a standard version, and a Geek Squad Certified Refurbished version for a few dollars less. All of your old Amiibo from previous Samsh. Bros games, as well as those from games starring amiibo.PNGSmash fighters will work as well. If you don't have one, think about picking up a Ridley a three-pack of classic characters, or whomever your favorite caharater is.

Of course the most important thing to pick up is the game itself. If you are a My Best Buy member, preordering the game will qualify you for $10 in rewards. If you pick the game up and register it with My Nintendo by January 31, you’ll also get the Piranha Plant character for free when it is released. Be sure to be on the lookout for the Fighters Pass, a downloadable content bundle that will add more characters, stages, and music to the game throughout the next year.

If you want to play Super Smash Bros Ultimate online you’ll also want to pick up a subscription to Switch Online. It’s available in 3-month and 1-year lengths. Maybe we’ll run into each other out there. I plan on sticking with Lucas from Earthbound, but maybe one of the new characters will catch my eye.
