Welcome to our forum. You ask a great question. From what I understand, it is not recommended to connect an appliance of any sort to a 2-prong outlet as it is not grounded and, as you suggest, it can cause significant damage to your home. My best suggestion would be to speak with your landlord and see if this outlet can be grounded, as that would be far safer to use with an air conditioner or any other item that draws a lot of power.
