Can I change the electrical cord on my air conditioner?

I bought a room air conditioner (Model: FAM186R2A) and the electrical requirements state: 230V/208V; requires NEMA LCDI plug type 6-15P. The last air conditioner had a 5-20R

T-slot plug and was also 230V. Of course the new one won't plug into the wall socket I have.

I was told by a friend that I can switch the cords. Take the old one off the old a.c. and put it

on the new a.c. and then it will fit the wall plug and work fine. Can I switch cords on these

two air conditioners without a problem? If you have the answer I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Re: Can I change the electrical cord on my air conditioner?

Good afternoon MrMike -

Hrm.  Good question.  I cannot tell you to switch the cords on these units, however maybe some of our other posters have more information.

Anyone?

Re: Can I change the electrical cord on my air conditioner?

Hi MrMike,

You may want to contact the manufacturer of the new unit - power isn't something to be dealt with lightly, and it's quite probably that making such an alteration would void any warranty on the unit.  Safety first!!

Best wishes,
