Hi, aliqualiy,
Thanks for taking the time to interact with us on our Forums! Cell phones are easily our most used electronic device, so I can understand why you'd be looking into the pros and cons for an unlocked phone. There are a few possible disadvantages to unlocked phones; it all depends on how you look at it.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! We are happy to help!
Sincerely,

I've been very lucky buying direct from the carrier, which mine is Tracfone, I've had nothing but good luck with the phones I've bought. There is a risk of bringing your own phone though. Manufacturers of the phones often have to repair your phone for you if you just have the standard warranty and that can leave you without a phone.
Best Buy has multiple Geek Squad options to make sure your phone is covered in the event of damage.
I would highly suggest it, and buying a case and tempered glass screen protector if possible to buy as it helps prevent costly repairs.
If you have any questions your Local Geek Squad would be happy to answer questions prior to purchase.
