ipod battery life

I'm wondering if the battery life is affected by temp/altitude? For example, I have fully charged my ipod, then went up to the mountains the very next day and as soon as i turned my ipod on, it showed only about 1/4 charged. I was at a higher altitude and it was colder, does this affect it? If so, when the temp changes, should it go back to a fuller charge, or does it stay depleted?
