Stolen ipod

My daughter ipod was stolen ,I bought it from best buy last year this same time for my daughters It was a Christmas gift my kids have been grounded so there hasn't been but two kids over here And my brother and his girlfriend ,I heard tonight that my brother who is well known for stealing and does not pay  for thngs like this. that he told someone that he bought a ipod touch  from walmart over the weekend .Its been gone for two weeks now and my brother was downloading music while her ipod was at the computer ,I just found out it was gone like five days ago My daughter told me someone took it from the computer far as I can see there is no way of tracing a ipod ,i firgure with all the app out there there would be one that could be downloaded ?I also would have thought if I have the box with serial number that apple could trace it but I guess not .Now I'm thinking about protecting my other daughters so if its stolen ,I would like to know if anyone knows of a app that i can get her download and trace it.i do know if someone steals it they can deleate the app off but there should be one where you got to know the pass code or log in the remove it IM also think about making a police report since he is well know for this Asking for him to show me the pod so I can see if the serial number matches ,if he has a receipt which I sire he does not have or can show me that it's not my daughter it would make me so happy .i man if he did not steal it then what's there to hide right?but i a;so hate accusing anyone and not know 100% they took it,because there was two people that i had in mind up until today ,i tried to scare these two people i told them that whoever had it it was being traced and i woud get ever address the ipod has been at. i didn't accuse them I just said it when it was  talked about in front of them believe if either had it they would have been scared and came back sat it in a room in my home,I'm think if I do this and my brother doesn't prove me wrong IM also goanna take it to small claims court ,it really hurts me to think he would steal from me but I heard him bragging about steeling from many of other people and selling items to people ,so its problem goanna be sold ,he goanna say he didn't tell anyone he had one I don't talk to my brother due to a recent fuss we had,I'm also waiting for a friend to call him and she is on the road truck driver she goanna tell him she ants to buy her son one for Christmas to see if he says he has one or wants to sell one ,if he has it he will try to sell it to her ,it hurts me to think he would and it's not the money that has me so mad,its that someone has come in my home and stole .so lately I have not been letting company that I don't trust come over ,

Re: Stolen ipod

A couple things.

1. Setup "Find My iPod" on the other device. http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/built-in-apps/find-my-ipodtouch.html Please note that in order to use this feature the iPod must be either a 3rd Gen or 4th Gen device.

2. Report the lost iPod to Apple. Apple can deactivate the device next time its connected to their systems through iTunes. And if a police report is on file they will even give the police the last IP address that was used on it so they can track the thief down that way.

Re: Stolen ipod

Note that many local police departments *WILL NOT* do anything with the information received.  There are different interpretaions of the various laws that apply here, and some jurisdictions will investigate, some won't.  There are issues with "due cause" and "illegal search and seizure", so many departments are reticent to open themselves up to potential lawsuits.  It's a shame when the crooks and thieves receive more protection under the law than do law abiding citizens, but that is what we have in this country.
