You're probably looking at something like Apple's iPod Touch or Microsoft's Zune HD. For the sake of thoroughness, I've commented below on each of your preferred specs. I hope this information helps!

Is there such a machine? And what is it called? I am not technically savvy (perhaps you've noticed!) so would love guidance. I'd also like this device to run on a rechargeable battery, for airplane trips (where power is not available). Both devices have rechargeable batteries. The iPod touch has up to 30 hours audio playback, up to 6 hours video playback (found here). The Zune HD has up to 33 hours (wireless off); video, up to 8.5 hours (found here).
