iPods & MP3 players

My son, who has developmental needs, uses the IPOD Touch to communicate. The backlight appears to have gone and we can no longer see the IPOD Touch screen clearly. The IPOD functions but the backlight isn't working. We called Best Buy and our warranty ended last month. Is there anyway we can restore or fix this cost effiicently so our child can use this to communicate?
