I want to purchase the basic Kindle for my 9 year old but we do not currently have wireless internet in our home.  We plan to have it in the next 1 1/2 years but until then, is it possible to visit places that offer free wifi to upload books?

You can usually find places such as coffee shops and libraries that will offer free wifi for their customers.  Just ask around at the front desks of some establishments in your area for more information.

Also most fast food restraints have free wifi, this includes something like 90% of McDonalds. They plan on making it 100% by 2015 I think.
