I dunno if anybody here has ever dealt with this, but my iPad 2 I bought about a month ago from my local BBY has just had something happen with the smart cover.  Suddenly the magnets on the cover's hinge have come through the plastic strip and left some pretty deep gouges in the back of the iPad.

does anybody know if best buy will exchange this?  or will I have to go to an Apple Store like the members at MacRumors did?

Apple store would be your best bet as you have 30 days on a return at BBY. But to return the product must be in like new condition which yours wouldn't be.

nearest apple store is an hour away.  i think i'll take some pictures and throw them an email before i head that way.

That and you should probably call them and try to explain exactly what is happening, citing that other users have been having the same problems.
