Can someone confirm that the Galaxy tab 8.9 indeed has a micro SD card slot? I am seeing conflicting information all over the place

I am not sure why you are not able to visit the Samsung website. Maybe a direct link will help you find it:

Regardless of what you may have been told by third party stor employees, your best bet is from the source itself, and there is no mention of an SD Card Slot. This lack of any mention would indicate to me, and I think to most people, that it is because there isn't one.
If you buy the device after seeing what is posted on the OEM website but choose to believe what a retail associate tells you, make sure you know the exact return policy so that you can return it when you discover that there isn't an SD card slot.

Worst case if it doesn't - get the USB host adapter and transfer media from a thumb drive.
16GB is enough to hold a few hours of video and many hours of music before you plug in the thumb drive and copy some files.

When using the Host Adapter, is there a limit on the SD card that can be used? My friend has a 64 GB card from his busted camera, would there be any compatibility issues?

64GB is SDXC, which has two potential issues:
1) A lot of USB SDHC readers may not support it properly.
2) SDXC officially uses exFAT instead of FAT32. exFAT Linux support isn't too hot now. It may be possible on a device running a custom kernel, but not likely stock. However I've heard that a lot of 64GB SDXCs are coming FAT32-formatted.
