Re: need a dvd recorder to get movies off my Dish Network dvr

It's not illegal to do this for home use. It's only illegal if you circumvent copy protection schemes.

You have the right to record shows to your VCR/DVR/DVDR.

The rights holder has the right to add copy protection flags that limit your ability to record.

Here's a nice listing of each copy protection flag:

http://dvr.about.com/od/dvrbasics/a/Understanding-Copy-Protection.htm

On this page the section entitled "Copy-Protection and Recording Cable/Satellite Programming" covers what the OP is trying to accomplish.

If it was illegal, ask yourself why:

1) Best Buy sells devices that do this.

2) Dish Network has instructions in their manuals on how to do it.

3) You can set recordings to never delete on every DVR available.

4) You can increase storage for recordings on DVR's.

5) Within Windows Media Center you can record shows to DVD that have the copy freely flag on them.

I'm quite sure that all of these corporations have determined the

Distribution, sale, or public exhibition of these recordings is illegal, but for personal home use it has been, and for the forseeable future legal.
