Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

I recently bought a SAMSUNG UN55KS8500FXZA CURVED 4K Smart LED TV from Bestbuy and have connected to WI-FI network in my home. The Wi-fi router is around 15 feet far from my TV and the upload and download speeds I notice in my TV are 0.5MBPS download and 5.5 MBPS upload (via speedtest.net).

From my other devices like mobile phone and laptop, I notice speeds of 15-20MBPS download and 5-6 MBPS upload.

Looks like the TV is still receiving the same upload speeds like other devices but not receiving the same download speed. Due to this, I face issues in streaming 4K videos from Youtube or Netflix which keeps on buffering.

Could anyone help me out with what could be the reason for this?

Re: Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

Hi ksbvarna,

Thanks for swinging by the Home Theater product board to seek some help your Smart TV’s download speeds.

Having numerous connected devices in your home can make streaming slower, and cause buffering issues.  Personally my home has almost 100 devices that can connect to wifi, but at any given time only 10 are in use. (Phones, Laptop, TV’s, Smart Enabled lights, and a Nest Camera that we use as a baby monitor.)

4K content may require a 25 Mbps per device for an download speed as noted here. How many devices does your home have? You may not have the correct router to adequately support your streaming needs. Often times routers will place a rank system on the devices connected. This means items that were connected first may get more bandwidth, and faster speeds.

Have you tried to disconnect select items from the internet to see that causes less buffering issues? Unfortunately, the KS8500 series doesn’t have an Ethernet LAN port to hardwire the connection. What speed does your internet provider claim you should be receiving?

You’re more than welcome to visit BestBuy.com’s Networking Buying Guide to learn more about the benefits of potentially upgrading your system.

Re: Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

Thanks for your reply.

I have around 6-8 devices connected to my WI-FI network and in all these devices I get download speeds of around 20-25mbps. It's only on TV that I am getting only 1 MBPS (Checked using speedtest.net on all devices). The upload speed seems to be same in all devices including TV.

I even tried disconnecting all other devices and only TV. Even then I see the same download speeds with the only TV connected to WI-FI router.

I even tried connecting to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands of Wi-Fi and it is still the same.

Regards,

Bharath

Re: Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

Hello Bharath,

How old is your router? What series is it? N or AC? It’s recommended with 8 connected devices, and wanting to stream 4K you’d need a High Performance AC Router. You’re more than welcome to review our Network Buying Guide for more information on that.

What kind of speeds does your internet provider claim they can provide you? Have you spoken to them regarding your issue? They may be able to provide some carrier specific advice to you on this matter.

Can you please try Geek Squad’s speed test here?

Re: Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

I have NETGEAR N600 Wi-Fi DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem Router (C3700) (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-n600-dual-band-router-with-docsis-3-0-cable-modem-black/3707003....) which is one year old.

The speed claimed by my Internet Service Provider (Xfinity Comcast) is 25MBPS. I have not reached out to them yet since I am receiving a good speed when checked in any other device (mobile phones, AppleTV and XBox One).

I will also try reaching out to them.

But and as I mentioned earlier, I disconnected all other devices and only connected my 4K TV to my WI-FI network and even then I do not see good download speed. So was suspecting some issues with the TV.

Regards,

Bharath

Re: Wi-fi download speed on my Smart TV

Hello Bharath,

It doesn’t appear that there’s a firmware update for this model. While browsing Samsung’s community there’s some other reports of similar issues.

When did you purchase your UN55KS8500 TV? You may want to seek Samsung’s advice on this matter as well to see if a it could be a faulty network card. Since there’s no Ethernet port we’d be unable to test what a hard wired connection may be able to do.

I bought the TV in April 2017. I will reach out to Samsung’s advice on this matter as you have suggested. Thanks for the response.
