RCA 46" LCD HDTV

I thought this TV was great until it was not even 90 days old. It's actually the second set, since the first one had a bad pixel right out of the box, which the store replaced. Now the second set has developed vertical bars 2"- 3" wide, due to a Geek Squad diagnosis of a bad panel, which cannot be replaced. The GS Tech recommended replacing it with a different manufacturer, since, in his words,  "it's not your mom and dad's RCA".  After over 30 minutes of shopping and comparing at the store, we were told that the 46" Insignia set we selected, at a $170 higher price, was not only not in stock, it could not be ordered. There was not an "unavailable" sign on the display. When we asked, and were approved for, a temporary replacement RCA set to use until the Insignia hopefully came in, we were told that there was not one of those available either.

I appreciate the manager's attempt to get us a working replacement, but when the alternatives continuously bomb-out, I would expect further attempts to reconcile the situation beyond just requiring that that customer continue to escalate the price range to fit the store's inventory. You can't fix it, you can't replace it, you can't sell me a better replacement within a reasonable price difference, so now it's your turn to find a way to honor your warranty. The set is getting progressively worse.

My expectations are: (1) Offer me a reasonably comparable and reputable 46" HDTV (that is actually available) and (2) Quit selling merchandise that not even your Techs believe in.

I could hardly believe that I was allowed to walk out of the store with my dysfunctional TV and with no promise of a resolution (just the hope that the 46" Insignia would be in within 30 days).

Re: RCA 46" LCD HDTV

I apologize that the tech didn't believe in the television.  The 46" RCA has actually been a very good television for consumers looking for a low-price, non high tech unit.

Did the manager check to see if he could get another unit sent in from a surrounding store?  Even if the television is not orderable, we can often get one from other stores to fulfill a customer's needs.  Sadly, at this point in the year, a lot of televisions are unavailable due to the clearancing out of old units and waiting for new arrivals.  Did they just tell you to "wait and see" about the 46" Insignia TV coming in?  Or was an order actually processed?

They tried area stores, but it was not available, or orderable, anywhere. Yes, I guess you could call it a wait & see status. No order was processed. The best I could get was a 30 day rain check on the higher priced set.

Re: RCA 46" LCD HDTV

I recently bought the Same TV.So far its OKAY.Hope it stays that way.I was hurried to pick that one and out the door.(My fault.) It didn't seem to matter that I had many questions that went unanswered.TERRIBLE Salesman;even though I bought it.I wasn't offered their warranty that costs more.I forgot to get it when I had the chance. One of the unanswered questions was playing the sound from the TV through my Surround Sound Home Theatre system.I guess I have it figured out.Yes it has an HDMI.Good luck getting a replacement.I've heard Best Buy was good.I'm not impressed.(That same store visit I wanted to talk to someone about a Macmini.Didn't happen.I was ignored.)This store;if its alright to mention is in Sandy,Utah.

I agree with the service guy, RCA is certainly not the company it once was.

RCA is terrible. It's the worst brand BB carries.

RCA is the first brand that made my "I will never buy this brand again" list.

Re: RCA 46" LCD HDTV

One thing to understand is that RCA is not the RCA that you may have grown up with.  Currently RCA, Westinghouse, and Klipsch are owned by Audiovox, Audiovox has a tendency to make generic products and slap a well-known name on them.  For the money, they are fine products, but for the technology-snobs, they're crap.

Re: RCA 46" LCD HDTV

After continuously searching for a non-RCA replacement, I finally found one at a nearby BB store that had been on hold for someone else. The store released it, a 46" INSIGNIA LED, to me after confirming that the "holding" customer no longer needed it. So far so good - absolutely no complaints. It did cost $150 more, but I think it will be worth it, especially since it came with a 2 year warranty. The sound is 100% better than the RCA, and the USB port can actually be used for something other than servicing. The same service Tech who advised against another RCA said that INSIGNIA is essentially the BB store brand name for a SAMSUNG or TOSHIBA grade television -  hopefully he's right. I have to say that the BB people I dealt with were all great - just victims of poor products and under stocking.
