I have many movies saved on my computer/hard drive. Rather than connect my laptop via HDMI or buy AppleTV etc... I was wondering if I could watch my videos through a Blu Ray player (since we will purchase one soon)?
For instance the Samsung BD-C6500 has a USB port for 1GB storage but I don't know if this means I can do video playback. Oh, and my videos are .m4v
Any ideas/suggestions...?

No, you can't play iTunes movie files without a computer and appropriate software or an AppleTV.

That's what I thought but I also I thought that maybe either some DVD or Blu Ray players could handle downloaded files.
I also thought that possibly a USB-based external hard disk kits with video out capabilities (but not sure what those are).
Finally, I also heard of a Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player but think I'd go with Apple TV over that...

Are these itunes purchases or movies that you made? If they're itunes purchases, your only option is an Apple TV. If you made the files, there are plenty of Blu Ray players with m4v support. You can always buy ne and see what happens. I wouldn't recommend a Samsung player though, LG players are much friendlier to playing files over your home network.

yes, these are movies I made - Thanks for the Blu Ray suggestion - especially since my TV is an LG (47 inch LED).

If using the Samsung player, what I've been using with good luck is the Samsung PC Share Manager: Here's a link

You could also check out these other media servers if you find "PC Share Manager" cumbersome or inadequate as some in other post on Samsungs site have they are as follows:

Do you have an 47" LW model if so it should support that playback. Just plug the USB into the TV.
You don't need a blueray to play the movies in that case. If your TV is older though go with the above LG blu ray player recommened it should support that file.

I tried a bunch of DLNA servers for my panasonic, and found the only one that consisntently transcoded files for my Panasonic was Twonkymedia server.
