By the way Slim what are you using to receive channels that you have it set to 4:3,

I avoid 4:3 like the plague, but sometimes you can't get around it. Commercials, old TV shows, stuff like that. I stretch for long term view, but since my TV doesn't automatically maintain the fullscreen aspect, it can become a task to constantly manual-switch.

It's not a big deal, like you, I've optimized my setting to slow the inevitable.

Re: Image Retention on Year Old Samsung Plasma

After putting the contrast and brightness down to 50, I was still seeing IR when watching the History Channel for 15 mins (big H left on the screen when the screen was white).  It went away in about 5 mins.  So I ended up calling Samsung to talk with them about it.  The said it's definitely not normal to have IR after watching something for such a short period of time.  They assigned the issue to a local tech who ordered a new panel for me under warranty.  They did that sight unseen based just on what I described over the phone.  I have to admit that I'm impressed by this.  Of course, I don't know if the tech is just ordering a new panel in order to get paid without having to make more than one trip across town or if he truly feels the problem is bad.

So you guys don't see any image retention whatsoever from the brighter logos like CNN after 30 or so mins of watching, then going straight to the scrolling to see if there's anything there?  That's what I'm mainly concerned about whether that is to be expected at all.  It always went away relatively quickly and I could only see it when scrolling or on a white background (usually a dimmer white background rather than bright, bright white).  I could only rarely see it during regular programming.  I'd just hate for this to happen on another panel (which I will break in properly).  I'd still like to be able to spend my weekends watching sports or watching CNN for an hour or two without having to worry about what it's doing to my TV.

Thanks.

Wow. I'm just as shocked as your are about the promptness to replace that panel.

While I don't think your set is necessarily out of line for a plasma display, apparently it doesn't even matter now. Props to Samsung.

Re: Image Retention on Year Old Samsung Plasma

Hey Slim, do you get any IR on your plasma set after watching channels with bright logos (History, CNN, etc.) for 15-30 mins or so?  Just curious.  I usually have to use the scroll to see it, but I can sometimes see it if there's a solid white or light background during a show too.

Re: Image Retention on Year Old Samsung Plasma

There are some areas of my screen where I get some IR and some where I don't.  For example, when watching football or basketball on ESPN, I can see where the score was on the screen at the bottom center, but only on the center toward the left side, not toward the right.  Then I get IR at the bottom right corner of the screen where the CNN logo goes, but not to the left of it where a few other channels leave their logos.  So I guess it isn't normal.  I never get IR where Fox posts the scores at the top left or right of the screen during football even if watching for long periods of time.  During the Today Show this morning, I could see IR where they leave the time and temp on the left, but not where they leave the todayshow.com name on the right side.  Strange.

Re: Image Retention on Year Old Samsung Plasma

Hey Mustang, I hope you don't notice any at all.  I'd hate for you to see some, then end up obsessed about it like me :smileyhappy:  The reality is that I rarely see anything unless I scroll.  Then it's very noticeable.

You know, I really don't. Mind you, I'm REALLY an@l about that kind of stuff. Regardless, I haven't run into any "logo" battles on my plasma. I watch the military channel pretty regularly, and that logo isn't burning in. Other people in the household like to watch CNN alot, and I haven't noticed that one either.

My room is dark, so my brightness and contrast settings are way below your average plasma users.

Perhaps there is some validity to a defective/underperforming panel.

Re: Image Retention on Year Old Samsung Plasma

The technician came out to replace the panel.  He told me that what I was seeing is relatively normal and the image retention he sees on his plasma is about the same.  However, he suggested to go ahead and swap it out with the new one he brought.  Well, it wasn't new.  The replacement panel is much, much worse than my original.  It has MAJOR burn in at the top and bottom from letter boxes.  I can see it clearly no matter what content I'm viewing.  It also has a glowing pixel and the image on part of the panel is a little blurry at the bottom compared to the original.  He put my original panel on the floor face down when he replaced it and said there's no way he could clean it up and put it back.  I called Samsung and they're waiting for the notes from the tech before they can help me.  They said they may be able to simply consider it unrepairable and replace it with a new one.  Will have to wait and see.  I just can't believe that they sent me such an awful replacement!

It has gotten to a point where the TV is dictating what I watch.  I've avoided CNN, ESPN, morning news shows, etc.  I may go LCD if Samsung is willing to allow me to go that route if they offer a replacement (which is still up in the air).  Bummer.
