I think I have an idea of what the solution is, but first here's what I've tried....
In the video setup page of the DVD player setup menu, there is an option for HDMI setup. One of the options in the HDMI setup is Resolution. There are 6 resolution options: auto, 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. For whatever reason, 576p is highlighted differently and cannot be selected. All of the other options produce the same results. I change the resolution and exit the setup menu; at this point a message lights up on the screen "Display Connected - non HDCP Compliant". At this point, I turn off the TV (which also turns off the DVD player), and then I turn the TV back on. When I turn on the DVD player, the TV automatically switches to the HDMI connection, but I still get no video and about 5 seconds of sound, regardless of the resolution selected in the DVD player menu.
I went ahead and researched the error message to learn about HDCP compliance. I don't understand everything about it, but the manual for my TV lists "HDCP compliant" in the specifications and none of my DVDs are anything other than legitimate, store-bought DVDs (no burned DVDs, if that matters). But, reading (again) my DVD player manual, on the "Basic Connections" page, there is a note:
"For HDCP compliant or DVI TV, you need a HDMI-DVI adaptor cable (not supplied) to connect the DVI input jack from your TV to the HDMI OUT jack on this unit".
This looks like the answer to my problems. I read this before, but was confused because the image on that page is of the HDMI cable coming out of the DVD player and going into either a HDMI IN or a DVI IN hole of a TV, so I thought either connection would be sufficient.
Anyway, what do you think: Do I need to buy a HDMI-DVI adaptor cable to make this business work?

My latest idea of using the HDMI-DVI connection instead of HDMI (even though both the TV and DVD player have HDMI connections) is probably not going to work, as my new TV does not have a DVI input. I would have to get two new cables, one to go from HDMI to DVI and a second cable to go from DVI back to HDMI. I can't imagine that being the solution.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I think I've tried every combination of settings on both my TV and DVD player, but the HDMI connection is just not happening....

Here is some stuff I found on Phillips regarding your dvd player. One of the questions is about video not displaying.
Resoltuion:
1. Press OPEN/CLOSE to open the dvd player disc tray
2. Press the alphanumeric keypad "1" for a few seconds. Progressive scan will be turned off and the HDMI setting will be reverted to Auto.

i would recommend testing the dvd player on another tv, also test that input with another hdmi source. if you dont have the equipment for that, bring the dvd player into the store and have a home theater associate test it on a floor modle, if it works, the problem is the input on the tv, if it fails, the problem is the player or the cable. if the problem is the tv, you have a 30 day return/exchange period, if it is longer than that you will be under a 1 year manufacturer warrantee. if the tv is not the problem the same return/exchange policy is applied to the dvd player- the store should have extra hdmi cables they can test the dvd player out with. hope this helps.
