I want to buy an HDMI cable so that I can watch internet-streamed shows on my TV.  Are HDMI cables compatible with older box TVs? Or do I need a newer LCD, HD, Plasma, etc TV?

I don't follow what you're trying to accomplish. When you say watch internet streamed shows on your TV, are you trying to connect your computer to your TV? To answer your question, most TV's older than 6-7 years won't have a HDMI input. Especially if they're not flat panels.
