Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

Grapesoda, again all you have to do is a quick google search and you will see the following STILL make active TV's

Panansonic

Samsung

LG - Makes both Passive and Active -http://www.amazon.com/LG-60PZ550-60-Inch-Internet-Applications/dp/B004LU1N2Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=...

Sony

And I am sure Sharp is still coming out with an Active 3D this year as well.

Thos are all "Big Boys" as you put it.  Also Panny, Samsung, Sony and Xpand are teaming together to make one standard Active Glasses to use for all 3 instead of having to use panny for panny, sony for sony etc.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/08/panasonic-sony-samsung-and-xpand-finally-team-up-for-an-active/

OLED is coming out no doubt but being affordable is a different animal.  They are talking about the first TV being 55" and around $8,000.  That's insane and sure it will sell to those who are crazy rich but it won't sell to the masses just like the Sharp Elite hasn't.

Sales for 3D in general Active or Passive both are not doing well.  Lets face it they are not flying off the shelf. Active TV's are Cheaper and Panny puts out the Best TV's period and are cheaper then LED 3D TV's comparing apples to apples.  You are right the glasses are pricey but they are dropping like crazy.

Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

Bottom line, try them out before you buy. Any 3D gets into personal preference real fast, some people can't watch it at all. There is a good collection of info on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/geeksquadrecon if you find the info there useful please 'like' our page and leave suggestions for us to improve.

Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

Ate agent, 4-10% of the population is stereo-blind meaning their mind/eyes can't decipher 3d technologies that are in use today.

Many of the cases can be "cured" of stereo-blindness by training their minds to perceive these images as others do.

Small write up on cnet for this and I'll see if I can find it.

I'm sure Sony and Panasonic will continue to make active sets while they introduce their new passive 3D TVs but the output will be much lower. LG stopped making active LED sets after they released their passive line.

As far as OLED sales are concened, even if they are priced at $7,000- $8,000, people will buy them. You don't compare a Sharp Elite to an LG OLED TV. You just don't. And I'm sure during release, Best Buy and many other retailers will offer great financing options.

LG- discontinued (was only plasma in the first place)

Tohsiba - does not make enough TVs to count

Sony - Changing tech due to huge loss

Sammy and pana which was my original argument. Both on razor thin TV profit margins

The elites are only for hardcore AV guys and most people still go on about how they are not better than a kuro. TVs over 5k are like a 1.2b market to its not a small as you think for just consumer.... I don't have any real data for professional TVs though that are used in all sorts of industries so I cant give any figures there.

Passive 3D TVs had a 30% increase in 2011 over projections check npd or Isupply. Most people think they are selling slowly but they are picking up faster than expected if any thing Smart TVs which many outlets said 2012 35% of all TVs is looking to be closer to 25%. I am not sure if people just want TVs with 3D and not smart features or some other market force is driving them.

I think active 3D is just not viable economically to produce the emmiters and bluetooth tech are far more expensive than the FPR tech eventully they will have to sell the glasses at a loss to get market share. Passive will overtake sales until autostereoscopic becomes possible in the 3k range.

Back to Oleds, these will probably sell enough to recoup RnD by a fair margin (not marketing or manufactoring costs). They only need to sell about 6,000 per state to do that and that is US only throw the rest of the world in there and the number drops by a lot. Holiday 2012 will probably see them into 5k range and a huge bosst in sales. Holiday 2013 will move them in to the 3k-4k range and after that probably growth until the dominate the market at 80%+ of TVs because they are so cheap to produce at that point with printed Oleds that all other tech LCD/LED LCD/Plasma is just to costly or old to produce except for CRT/DLP because those will still cheap to produce as well.

Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

grapesoda, I am not sure where you heard that LG is getting out of the Active 3D TV business.

I am not sure where you heard that Sony is getting out as well. Although I could see them doing it.

They all are getting together to make one pair of Active 3D glasses that work accross each TV regardless of Brand.  Not sure why they would do that if they were getting out.

I stand my proof that the following are making Active 3D TV's

Sony

Panny

Samsung

LG

You clearly stated only TWO companies right now are making 3D Active TV's which is WRONG!!!!  There are at least 4 as of right now and I show no indication that will be changing in 2012.

People who buy TV's now are basically being forced to get a 3D TV.  It's pretty much a standard feature now on MOST TV's.  But 3D sales are still way down to what they would like to see period!

You have VERY HIGH hopes of OLED, and I can tell you haven't ever been in the TV business to understand things so I will give you a pass.  I will tell you, you are flat out wrong about OLED's TV's being 3k - 4K Holiday 2013 unless you are talking 40" or less.  Let's see if they even come out anytime this year.

Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

hereisjenna is there is a reason the best technology and TV's Pioneer KURO went out of business can you guess why? I will give you a hint it has to do with high priced TV's!!  Joe sick pack which are the one's buying the most TV's can not afford the $5K to $8K TV's and that was proved my Pioneer Kuro.

Sure they will sell OLED sets because there are people that want the new and best technology but not buy they truck loads..

Re: 3D TV. Samsung, LG?

1. The "Model" I have.
Samsung PN59D550

2. What convinced me to purchase this particular "Model".
Brand name and price of this model.

3. What I like best about my Plasma.
The picture quality is absolutely amazing, once I figured out you had to watch HD shows, not the standard ones.

4. What I don't like about my Plasma.
Nothing not to like!

5. What "Feature(s)" I  wish my Plasma had.
Has everything I want!

6. What advice or suggestion would I make to the "Manufacture" about your Plasma.
Samsung hit a home run with this one!

7. What was my biggest "Surprise" after I received my Plasma.
How the 3D worked! Fantastic!

8. What "Problems or Issues" have I had with my Plasma.
Once I figured out the menu, nothing.

9. Do I really think that todays "Prices" are worth it.
In my case, yes! I got mine for $999 with two 3D glasses.

10. Any additional information that I want to add?
I love my Plasma! I was disappointed at first as it didn't seem anywhere as sharp as I saw at Best Buy. Problem was two things, once I put it in movie mode, that helped a bunch, then since I never bothered to watch the HD stations before, just the regular ones, so DUH! when I tried the first HD station to see, it was like "WOW" what a difference! Night and Day. Then I tried the 3D and that was a double "Wow".  Then I added Samsung's 5.1 Channel Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System.
