What is the next step to updating my old palm pilot tungsten E2? Ipod or smartphone?

I have a palm tungsten e2 that I cannot sync with windows 7. What would be the next logical choice of handheld to migrate to that would accept 2400 contacts and their information so I can backup on my computer. I've looked at ipods, iphones, blackberrys and smartphones. I have been steered away from blackberrys and newer palms. Does anyone have a easy solution to hold 2400 contacts in a handheld (does not have to be a cellphone)? I would actually rather have a separate handheld that has many fields and search capability by any field. Many of the options I have looked at do not have enough fields to transfer my database to. Please let me know if anyone has been successful in this type of database transfer? How did you do it as well and keep everything in the correct fields. It has to sync with windows 7 so I can back it up but does not have to be backed up on my outlook.  I prefer not to pay a monthly fee to access my new handheld if possible. Please advise. Thank you.
