I need recommendations for a laptop

I am going to be maintaining a large database for an organization and need to buy a basic laptop.  I will need the following capabilities:

Enough memory to run database (now at 8 MB) and will most likely grow

Fast processor

Wireless capability

Internet capability

MS Office

I would appreciate some recommendations and will only use this laptop for the functions above.   I want to keep the price down to a minimum.  No gaming, etc.  Thank you.

Re: laptop 4 databases

I think any laptop can be used for databases.  However I'm more curious about your database.

  • is this database "mission critical"?  Can your business survive if the database is lost for a day, week, month, or forever?
  • how many users will be on this database?  Are you using the database by yourself?  Will it be shared by others?
  • what is your backup strategy?  What happens if the drive fails?  Can you afford to lose 1 day or more of work?

You might want to hire a computer expert to get indepth with your needs as to whether you need an "thin" or "fat" client.

Re: I need recommendations for a laptop

Hey SailingChef,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for coming to chat!

In my opinion, it sounds like you'd benefit far more from visiting your nearest Best Buy personally. Based on what you told us, there are tons of possibilities for models that COULD work for you. However, it'd be much safer if you can speak face-to-face with a Consultant in-store. As you can see in xl's reply, there is more we need to know to really help you out. For example:

  • Is this laptop for interfacing with the database and maintaining it, or is this machine going to HOST the database?
  • Will it be serving as a server as well?
  • Do you have a backup solution already?

There are many more factors, but those are just a few additional ones to add on to xl's list. Come on in Chef! We'd love to help you in person! (:
