Recycling computer components

Just tried to turn in my very old computer video card and ethernet card. The alarm went off as I went in and the guy at the door inquired as to what I was returning. He then let me know that they do not recycle old computer parts. This store was in San Diego, CA. Does that mean I can only recycle whole PC's (video card, motherboard, RAM, etc.)?

Re: Recycling computer components

I believe it has to do with CA law, that you have to bring in an entire computer.

Re: Recycling computer components

On the Best Buy Recycling FAQ, it says "Best Buy accepts most consumer electronics. We also accept accessories such as keyboards, mice, remotes, etc.", but does not explicitly say anything about cards and such. That's confusing. I did find more info on the CalRecycle website "Note: Many electronic wastes are not included in the Electronic Waste Recycling Act but are still considered hazardous wastes and may not be discarded in the trash. These electronic wastes are not eligible for payment." Best Buy probably doesn't accept cards since they don't get paid to dispose of it?

Re: Recycling computer components

Those are full peripherals, though.

I believe most of these recycling programs work by the retailer getting paid by the pound, so it would have nothing to do with BB being reimbursed.

I'll flag this to be looked at by a Community Connector.

Re: Recycling computer components

Hi cloud0418,

This store in San Diego, CA was incorrect that our recycling program in our stores doesn't accept computer parts to be recycled. I reached out to our team here at Best Buy® Corporate in charge of this program, and they said that this store should have accepted these parts to be recycled.
