Recycling (Going Green)

I'm glad Best Buy has a new recycling program for electronics, but I learned that my local store doesn't recycle ANY of their clean white paper, cardboard packaging, or clean plastic packaging.  Is this a company-wide thing?  With as much waste as the store generates, it could even be economical to sell all that stuff to a recycling company!  Why don't they do it?

Many stores have a cardboard baler.

I don't see much plastic being used, and since different municipalities can recycle different plastics, it'd be a headache to have to sort them. Not to mention that the plastic type is very rarely printed on packaging.

Every store has a couple bins for recycling paper, but no one uses them.

Hopefully I can shed some light on this for you! Your local Best Buy® store could actually be recycling there waste and not be aware of it. A number of our stores throw all their dry waste into one trash compactor, and that waste is then sent to a recycler that sorts out the recyclable material.

Some of our other stores sort out their recyclable dry waste, and dispose of it in the proper receptacle. I will admit that some of our stores currently don't have the capability to recycle their dry waste, but there is currently a company-wide recycling initiative that should be in place by the end of the year. This initiative should provided all of our stores the tools needed to recycle all of their dry waste that can be recycled.

I would also like to point out that this year our company has recycled 60 million pounds of cardboard, and 380 tons of plastics. My store (46) doesn't do any overt recycling... Is there a way that we can see if our store is one of the ones that has our compacter materials recycled?
