Dishwasher vs. Hand washing dishes

[ Edited ]

Hello,

Not so long ago, I heard that washing the dishes in the dishwasher was more earth friendly then washing them by hand. My husband thinks I am making up excuses to justify me, using the dishwasher (that I love and it’s one of my favorite appliances in the world, next to the washer and dryer) but am I really making up an excuse?

Re: Dishwasher vs. Hand washing dishes

Hi Karina-BBY,

It sounds like you feel like you are just making up excuses in order to continue to enjoy the convenience that a dishwasher provides, but luckily for your reasoning could be valid. Most legitimate studies show that a modern dishwasher is much more environmentally friendly than washing dishes by hand, but I do take the results of these studies with a grain of salt since the partners in the study usually are a dishwasher manufacturer. These studies are usually run by scientists of a university, which definitely lends credence to the results of their study. The most recent study was done by the University of Bonn in Germany, and their results show that modern dishwashers far out perform hand washing.

It sounds like you have a dishwasher, but if you're ever in the market for a new one I would definitely suggest getting one that is Energy Star qualified. I hope this information made you feel better about your use of your dishwasher!

Thanks,
Allan

Re: Dishwasher vs. Hand washing dishes

I prefer the dishwasher.  I feel it is more sanitary.  But I don't have any evidence to prove that.  Maybe I'm just lazy or like the convenience of using the dishwasher.  I sometimes do special loads in the dishwasher were I wash my shoes or smurf collection or other stuff.  I don't mix these loads with dishes/food prep stuff.  Some people think I'm strange for using the dishwasher for my "special" loans, but my sneakers come out squeaky clean.
