According to the http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Global-Promotions/Recycling-Electronics/pcmcat149900050025.c?id=pcmcat14... page hard drives suppose to be accepted for recycling however we stopped by at your Reston, VA store today and were turned down by the security person who said that hard drives are not accepted. I asked why and showed him recycling page on your site that clearly says that hdds are accepted but he said this information might be outdated or something like that. He then called store manager who said something like "we accept either external hard drives only or if they're installed inside the computer that you want to recycle" and she refused to either explain such statement or to even come to the door to talk directly to us instead of relaying her words through the security person.

After we were turned down at the store my wife called customer service asking if what we were told is correct, person on the phone first said that store manager is (always) right and that hard drives are not accepted at all and then hung up after my wife asked to explain why your site says that hard drives are accepted.

So, please clarify if you accept harddrives for recycling or not?

Thanks for reaching out to us on this. I know that when we first launched our recycling program we did not accept Hard Drives to be recycled, but I also see that on BestBuy.com we have Hard Drives listed as being accepted for recycling.

Because of this I have emailed my contact here at our corporate headquarters trying to get some clarification on this. Once I hear back from him I will post back to this thread.

I did hear back on this, and it is correct that our stores accept Hard Drives to be recycled. I have forwarded your concern to the management of this store, and have informed them we do accept Hard Drives to be recycled.

Thanks for your help. I stopped by at Best Buy store today and my harddrives were accepted for recycling with no questions asked. Thank you!

This policy change is still not known everywhere. I was rejected from recycling hard drives at the store in Niles (Warren?) Ohio over the weekend.

Thanks for letting us know. I have forwarded this onto the General Manager of this store, and would expect he will make sure his staff is accepting Hard Drives in the future to be recycled.

Today, I had some hard drives rejected by the Best Buy in Mentor, Ohio (Store 168).   The original post in this thread is dated April 2012.  I was sure enough time had passed for the policy change to make it out to all the locations.

Allan, could you reach out to management over there so that I might be successful on a second attempt?

They also rejected a DSL modem. According to http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Global-Promotions/Recycling-Electronics/pcmcat149900050025.c?id=pcmcat14... "Modems/Routers/Hubs" are accepted. 

Would you also be able to reach out to management about that as well?

Thanks for letting us know about this, and just an FYI the link you provided is somehow broken; I assume you were linking to our recycling page on BestBuy.com. I have emailed the management of this store, informing them that we do accept hard drives to be recycled, and asking them to contact you in order to arrange for a time for you to bring these hard drives back to this store to be recycled. Let me know if you don't hear from them.

Thanks Allan.  I got a call from the manager there informing me that all employees have been updated about recycling hard drives and inviting me to return.

It seems like an extra comma got attached to the link in my original post.  That was my mistake not separating it out better.
