What happens when I use a $100 certificate to make a $50 purchase?  How is the remainder treated?  Is a new certificate with the balance issued or does the old one still work?

That I am aware of you are unable to do that. You would have to make a $100 purchase not including tax to be able to use the certificate. Certificates have no real cash value so there isn't a balance except on your reward zone account. based on what you print out.  So if you printed out $50 you would have a balance of $50 worth of points.  But if you print the $100 you have to spend the $100.
