I'm still not understanding. The laptop was $1709.99, not $1609.99. I did not use a gift card to pay, the gift card was a promo that I received. $100 was taken off the laptop price of $1709.99, then I was charged $100 for the gift card, making the total $1709.99 again, essentially making he gift card "free" but I'm only earning points for $1609.99. It is my understanding that gift card purchases earn points as well. If this is true, then the way I was billed would make the "free" gift card a purchase, since I was technically billed, and so I should be earning points.

Correct, he did not buy a gift card or pay with one as Karina thinks. He bought a laptop for 1,709. He spent 1,709. He received a free $100 gift card for spending 1,709. The transaction rang up as if he paid 1,609 for the laptop and 100 for the gift card. The system is only giving him points for spending 1,609. The system recognizes the gift card as a promotional item and not a purchase of $100. He is short changed the points on $100 actually spent. This is how I read it.

They got a 100 dollar promotional item that they do not get points for. The computer itself is the only part they will get points on and spent 1609 on it. Think of it like a bundle. The system correctly recognizes the gift card as a promo item so you do not get points on it, and the system recognizes that they spent 1609 on the computer. It is the same as for example a bundle where you buy a 40 dollar game, and get a 5 dollar promo item, on your receipt the game comes up for 35 and the item 5, and you get 35 points.
