Need help Choosing a Laptop

Not sure where to put this but hopefully I can get some insight. Thanks

So here is what I will be using the laptop for:

- Multimedia Design (Graphics, Web, and some Audio/Video [rarely])
- Gaming (Mostly Star Wars The Old Republic)
- Regular Usage (Web, E-Mail, Music)

Need some assistance, Pro's and Con's between these 2 laptops.

ASUS G74SX or the Sony Vaio VPCF236FM/B

These are from BBy. Thanks in advanced, need some help with both of them. I know the obvious one of Sony w/ Blu Ray player and HD with ASUS not having those features. But need some more assistance and comments/suggestions. Thanks

Re: Need help Choosing a Laptop

Hey phino,

I wish I were shopping for a Gaming-capable laptop!  I'm excited for you. :robotvery-happy:

Well, it looks like that Sony Vaio VPCF236FM/B is currently sold out on BestBuy.com but, just for comparison, which model of the ASUS G74SX did you have your eye on?

For others refernece, here are the links to check out each of the laptops and their respective specs:

Re: Need help Choosing a Laptop

Yeah, the Best Buy by me has both in stock, but i'm still confused about which one to choose.

I was looking at the one that was in-store, the G74SX-BBK8.

the Asus is far better but cost more, i suggest if you plan on spending the cash you should look in to an alienware or razers new laptop

Re: Need help Choosing a Laptop

the sony model and asus model i was looking at both cost the same $1199+. Alienware M18x Model starts at $1999, Best Buy has M17X at $1500+, the razer on their site is $2800. i was considering a decked up M18X but in the end it ended up to be $3500+ and that dug too deep into the pockets, on top of saving for my wedding the end of the year.

if i were to get an alienware, it wouldn't be M17X, it would be the latest model, which is why i'm stuck between the G74SX vs Sony's.

key things is:

- i'm a designer using Adobe Master Suite 5.5 for mostly graphic and web
- some vidfeo/audio editing here and there
- Gaming for mainly SWToR, BF3 and possibly a few others. but mainly for SWToR

Re: Need help Choosing a Laptop

Well, I'm honestly not the best resource for Gaming PCs but the Asus G74SX-BBK8 and Sony Vaio VPCF236FM/B seems to go pretty head to head in terms of specs.  They are definitely in the same weight category (to use a wrestling metaphor) and either should be good for the uses you mentioned.  I would also recommend consulting with our store Computer Specialists if it's convenient as they have a wealth of knowledge to offer for questions like these.
