Question

Hello, I have recently applied at the Best Buy store in San Bernardino, California, for the Musical Instruments department. I have heard that part of the hiring process to become a Musical Instrument Specialist is that you have to "audition" (i.e. play guitar) for them. Is this true? I've been playing guitar for over 11 years, but I am not as versatile as I'd like to be (i.e. I mostly play punk or metal). I have prior retail experience as well, selling products.

Re: Question

Hey Corpsey,

So, although an intimate knowledge of music is very much a consideration in our Musical Instruments hiring, talent isn't necessarily the main focus.  Competency, understanding of the market/gear, and customer service in general are also other areas that may be looked at in your qualifications.  They may want to hear your guitar playing if you are interested in teaching lessons, but, otherwise, they might just see what you know about the industry.

Best of luck though!
