So I recently got into a small debate with some co-workers of mine regarding the "coolness" of a particular band name. The band was the Violent Femmes which I think is a great band name but my co-worker thinks it's terrible.
So that got me thinking about some of my favorite band names. Here's my short list. I'm sure I'll add more as I think of them but I'm really interested to see what our community thinks. Post your thoughts on my list and of course I encourage you to post your own list.
Some things to keep in mind: You don't have to like the band, just the name. Expanding upon that, don't just post your favorite bands, we're talking about their names. I love U2 but their band name is just so-so in my opinion.
My favorite band names (in no particular order):
-Nirvana
-Goldfrapp
-Atari Teenage Riot
-Sex Pistols
-Thunderheist
-Santigold
-Crystal Castles
-Maximo Park
-Depeche Mode
-Solid Gold
-Passion Pit
-Halloween, Alaka
-MF Doom
-Daft Punk

I like band names that can have a meaning to them. Either something specific that only the band knows about, or something that is open to interpretation by anyone else.
Being in a band myself, I think coming up with a name that everyone can agree on is often more difficult than it needs to be.
Some ones I like (some real, some potential):
-Not drowning but waving.
-Mea Culpa
- Happy for the Amish
-Stalling Hari-Kari
- Tool
- Nothing Special
-Free beer! (i know its goofy, but from the standpoint of getting people to your shows "tonight only: Free Beer!" would look good on a flyer.)
-Eulogy of a Traitor
Also, i think the names that clearly distinguish the band as a death metal band are funny.
-cannibal corpse
-death
-etc.

Minus the Bear is an excellent band with some great song titles.
And I'm seeing Grizzly Bear in September. I just read that Trent Reznor is a big Grizzly Bear fan.

There's a local band in this area that plays at some of the bars in town that's called "Been N Chicken"
Makes me laugh everytime I see the sign for their concerts. There was another local band that was called "Cinna the Poet" but they broke up and now I'm sad. *tear*
But as far as main stream bands go, some of my faves are
Violent Femmes
Dashboard Confessional
Snow Patrol
Kiss (anyone? C'mon!)
No Doubt
Presidents of the United States of America (plenty of peaches....)
Vertical Horizon
Okay, those are the only ones I can think of at the moment

"The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza"
I love it. I hate to admit it but that is one of those bands I'd buy the T-shirt of before the actually album.
