I've been with AT&T for 3 1/2 years (signed up directly with AT&T, not through BB), and I'd like to come to BB and switch to Verizon. We originally had a 2 year contract with AT&T, and have just continued to pay month-to-month. Anyway, my question is, do I need to contact AT&T and cancel my phone service with them first, or will BB do that when they switch my phone number to my new phone? I'm just not sure how that works when you switch from one carrier to another.

Don't cancel your AT&T service beforehand -- this would cause you to lose your phone number.

When you sign up for a Verizon plan at Best Buy Mobile, they can port your phone number from AT&T to Verizon. Doing so will automatically terminate your AT&T line. This is a pretty easy process, just be sure to let them know first thing!
