Long story short i'll try to condense as much as possible:
Originally from Idaho, have Alltel as service provider - before all the Alltel/Verizon team business, move for college to Texas where the nearest Alltel store is approx 5 hours away in Lousiana.
My mother called to see if she could get some answers about my phone upgrade as it's due and my poor phone is in dire need of being put out of it's misery, but it's been a little unclear. I did have to send my phone in and activate a new one via mail before shortly after moving here but that was a nightmare and i'd much prefer to have a store I can visit.
My question is, where I am there is a Best Buy less than 5 minutes from my front door and i'd love to upgrade my phone, will I be able to purchase and sign my new contract, which is a joint contract with my mom, here in Texas.
Thanks in advance if anyone has had this problem/knows the solution etc.

If the account is your mothers name I dont think you can do anything without her. Your mom may check with VZW to see if they have the ability to add another approved user that can modify the contract. I know with AT&T I can go to their website and add someone else that would give them the ability to modify my account without me.

I am an approved user.
I have full access to the account to make changes, I just need to see if I can upgrade an Alltel phone at a Verizon store.

Now that the merger is complete, you can do exactly what you are wanting to do. You technically are a Verizon customer now, so everything you need, one of our Mobile Consultants will be able to help you. If you have any more questions, feel free to keep posting!
