If my phone broke and I needed to get it replaced, could I just get a new one from the store or would it have to be sent to me in the mail?

Generally manufacturers don't cover the physical and liquid damages of mobile phone except if you receive your parcel which had broken item. Means, if you receive your mobile phone which had broken already then you can claim for a new one otherwise you can try your luck by requesting the showroom guys from where you purchased it.

It depends....Maximum times they don't but exceptionally yes....So better try your luck by giving some solid reasons to them if ever you stuck in such situation.
