Buying a smartphone and data plans?

If I were to buy a upgrade smartphone online, would the site force me into a data plan? It seem like once I add to cart and complete the purchase process, there won't be a requirement of me getting data plan. Unless once the phone ships to me and I start up the phone, it'll require me to talk to a tmobile representative or something. Anyone familiar with this?

Yes you have to have a data plan with a smartphone.

Re: Buying a smartphone and data plans?

If it is letting you purchase the phone without adding on a data plan then yes, once you get the phone and start using it a t mobile rep will contact you to set up a data plan. If you do not ever set up a data plan and ignore their calls they will choose a data plan for you.

Re: Buying a smartphone and data plans?

IF t-mobile is like vzw, if you had an unlimited data plan for a set fee prior to the beginning of " data plans ", you would fall under the grandfather clause. Thus keeping that unlimited plan. And it will remain that way as long as you keep a smartphone on your plan. Now that's PROVIDING it's like vzw.
