Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

So, it's become apparent that 32gb iPhone 4s are in short supply, but what is the deal with pre-orders? Are we ever going to get them? My pre-order store #1028 keeps telling me my phone is listed as "In-transit" but it has yet to show up.

Does this mean it's in a truck somewhere, on it's way to the store? Have they actually been allocated some, or am I just sitting around when I could have been on a line at another store?

I'm not bashing anyone here, the reps I've spoken to have been courteous, but I'd just like to know if I'm going to get one soon or if I'm stuck waiting weeks for the magical second shipment that Apple intends to send out. It would be nice if I could get a response other than "It should be here tomorrow" when tomorrow has yet to arrive.

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

I suggest wait until the 29th. If you hear nothing from BB by the morning, check with AT&T stores and Apple stores in your area. AT&T is suppose to be handing out iPhone 4 to paying walk in customers on the 29th. You might have to stand in line but if you want one this bad that is probably the way to go. Apple is obviously shorting the big box retailers to funnel more inventory to their Apple and AT&T stores for the time being or so it seems with the small totals my local BB and RS and WM stores have had.

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

I have to agree with the OP.

I also ordered a 32 Gig iPhone 4 on Pre order from store #1028.  When ordered the I specifically asked the rep if I would get the phone due to high volume and inventory concerns.  The rep told me absolutely no problem on Friday, I would have my phone.  I never received any calls on Friday.. I called in 3 times and was told that the status is "in transit" and that it was Apples fault, not Best Buys.  I am not really interested in whose fault it is, but I know of a few colleagues that walked into store #1028 and picked theirs up right away.

When I called on Saturday to ask about my phone, one of the reps hung up on me.  Not very courteous.  All I want is a proper update or a call to pick up my phone.  I don't feel that "its on the truck somewhere in the USA and it will get here eventually" to be a proper update.. Nor do I believe hanging up on customers to be an appropriate response.

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

The BB Mobile rep told me Tuesday as well, so hopefully they do actually get a shipment in by then. If not, I'll have to flip a coin and see if I want to keep waiting at home for Apple-Best Buy to sort out this goat-screw, or if I want to wait in line at an AT&T store.

When it comes down to it, I'm like a lot of other people who ordered from BB hoping to use up Reward Zone dollars (racked up from buying previous iPhones, how about that for irony?) that I'll probably never have any other reason to use.I guess saving $60 on the purchase price is worth waiting a little longer for, considering that the in-store reps have been courteous (if not exactly informative).

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

You are probably better off heading to an Apple Store if you have one nearby.  After a very bad experience with BB (rep called me to lie to me that the 32GB phones had been 'recalled by Apple' (!!) to explain why I wouldn't get one for a long time), I tried the AS.  I had to wait in line for 2 hours but I got my 32GB - and the staff very incredibly nice and helpful.  AS is getting all my Apple dollars moving forward...

At least Sentry received courteous service.

This was this first and last time I will ever pre-order from Best Buy.  I only fault the sales rep that guaranteed me a phone on Friday.

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

I do feel like the reps are just giving me bogus answers. "Is it arriving soon or am I going to be waiting till July?... Try back tomorrow/Try back on the 29th/Anything to get me off the phone."

I don't think they really know when they're getting stock. This whole event has been a total goat-screw from one end to the other. I blame the entities, not the individual employees though. Apple screwed Best Buy, Best Buy screwed us, and now we get to call their mobile reps and make them answer the same question a bazillion times a day.

It's just very frustrating to give your business to a company and then end up being totally in the dark.

Re: Best Buy's iPhone stock: Will it ever come?

Although I don't blame BB for the shortage of phones, what did bother me about the customer service at BB was how I was strung along.  I ordered a 16gb iphone from store 804. I was told I was 12th in line for the 16gb when I dropped by a few days before launch. The evening before launch I had still not received a call from BB so I decided to drop by again. When I asked the mobile manager what was going on he said "sorry, we are calling right now. Our inventory just came in". At that point he checked the "list" (basically he had no list and was just flipping through the preorders and looking at the time stamp) and told me that I would not have a phone on launch. Of course I asked how many phones they got. He said, we got 2x32s and 16x16s. How was a I 12th on the 16gb list and not get one if they got 16??? I'm a pretty laid back guy and since I could tell they never had a list, I decided not to make a fuss about it. I just asked when he thought I would get mine. He said "you are the very next person on the 16gb list" and "we are getting a shipment tomorrow morning" and that I was guaranteed a phone from that shipment. He set up a tentative appt for 1pm the next day and that was that. I walked out the store upset, but was just going to see how this played out.

Next morning I get a call from BB, the mobile rep told me that they were getting a new shipment in a few hours and that I would be called if the phone came in. This was about 9 am and they said the shipment would come in around 10-10:30. Noon comes along and I get no phone call so I decide to call them. The person I spoke with said that they got their shipment but not all of it (which implies they should get the rest of the shipment and that it came in multiple shipments). He said my phone was not "physically in the store" and that it would not be here by 1 but should be in by the afternoon. It sounded pretty guaranteeish to me. Come 3pm, I get a call from the manager again and he says the shipment had not come in yet, but he would call me when it did, either later that afternoon or tomorrow. At this point they continued to give me a lot of hope that this phantom 2nd half of the shipment would show up. Evening comes and goes and no call.

Finally, the next day (the 25th, day after launch) comes and I'm pretty upset with it all. I decide to call apple stores (its about 8 am since apple stores opened at 8 that day) and found one that had phones. I drove 20 minutes, waited in line for 5 mins and was out with a new 32gb in less than 15. Of course I still had not received a call from BB about the shipment which they seemed pretty confident would show up. Around 2-3 in the afternoon I go to BB and cancel my preorder.  Listening to the rep talking to another employee, it seemed like a shipment that day was not really going to happen.

I don't know what was going on. I like to believe in people, but to string me along for so long seems like bad customer service. I would rather hear "I don't know when your phone will come" then "your phone is not physically in the store, but we expect it in this afternoon in our next shipment"  Maybe they did expect another shipment and never got it, I dont know, but all in all it seemed sort of fishy to me.

Moral of story: Don't preorder apple stuff from BB and just go to the apple store the next day after launch lol.
