My B/F has an AT&T contract so I guess he's stuck with it. I would really like to get him a new phone that has GPS and maps but don't know what's available. Does anyone have an recommendations?

It's a matter of personal prefference, there is a lot of ATT cellphone with GPS receiver.

iphone 3g also has GPS with maps. All other uses ATT navigator which requires a monthly subscription to use, or you can use third party applications like google live (free, maps only, and uses needed data service to download maps on the go), and garmin mobile xt (about $99 with no monthly fee, unless you opt for live traffic, weather etc.> it's a full featured GPS turn by turn direction, and does not need an ATT data service plan) It's you choice.
