i have a kdc-c810 (changer) and a kdc-mp338 (sterio) and i was wondering if they are compatible. when i hook them up the sterio says "auto changer".

Without contacting Kenwood to make sure I would think not after some quick research. According to the manual for that Kenwood radio, only Kenwood CD changers made on or after 1998 will work with the Kenwood KDC-MP338. As far as I can tell, the Kenwood KDC-C810 CD changer was made in 1997.
