hi there guys yesterday i have a bad experiencie when i go to the best buy store in my town the thing is
i have two ps3 of 40 gigs each and i have the prp on both ps3 so yesterday one of the ps3 breaks and i decide to take it to the store so the original price of my ps3 was 399 right i buy it like in june of 2008, so i take it to the store and the tech guy at geek squad check the item and he toll me to go to customer service to get a replacement so i went for a 120 gb ps3 slim and it was 299 so i ask what is gonna be with the rest of the money coz the ps3 of 40 gigs cost me 399 so they toll me that is just a replacement and the rest of the money is gonna be lost and i toll them that i need to talk to the manager, and i explain to him that severals montsh ago i return a xbox 360 that cost me 399 and i grab an elite for 299 and they give me the rest in a gift card, so i ask to the manager if he can do that and he toll me that the prp doesnt work like that that is just a replacement and i toll him well let me grab a 250 gb ps3 that cost 350 dollars , 50 dollas less than the 40 gb ps3 that i buy long ago, well he toll me that he can do that coz the price was to high and its just a replacemnt, he insist that it just technology for tecnologhy so he charge me the 120 gb ps3 for 399 and i say ohh no my friend and i get very angry, really i was shaking dudes i have to claim what is in the prp plan that they give me a replacement of equal price right so he went mad and i go to so in the end he toll me i gonna give you a gift card for 399 dollars but in my knowledge i know that if they give you a gift card is for the total price of the item plus tax right so he just give me 399 in a gift card and no tax so and after he gave the gift card i ask him can i go to shop something now, and he toll me not in this store, what the F man i was in my right to ask what in the prp plan says so i want to report this manager, come on man to tell me that im not allowed to buy in his store he was a complete son of a gun. another thing that i need to know if my other ps3 breaks i can go to a store and instead of a replacement can i request a gift card??? coz they toll me that they dont give store credit its onle a replacement

You said you returned a 360 a few months ago. Did you just do a return within 30 days, or was this a PRP claim?
The manager was correct. The PRP does not give you store credit, nor does it give you a product of equal price. As the manager stated, the PRP replaces your product with the same product, or, if one is not avaliable, comparable technology. Since a 40GB PS3 was no longer avaliable, the closest product was the 120GB PS3.

Perhaps that is referring to an older plan? It has been my understanding that you'll only be eligible for a GC if there is no comparable product. A Community Connector will respond shortly to clarify.

Hello Edmonro,
I’m not sure why there would have been any confusion regarding your service plan coverage, but I’d be glad to clarify what each type of plan entails.
First of all, you are correct in understanding that Product Replacement Plans (PRPs) do guarantee the original purchase price of the covered product. That means that if the product is found to be defective you would be issued a gift card for that full amount. Some stores may choose to process PRP claims as exchanges though, instead providing customers a comparable replacement product and a gift card for any remaining difference in price.
Geek Squad Black Tie Protection, on the other hand, does not guarantee the original purchase price – it guarantees the technology. Under GSBTP plans, products that are found to be defective (and are approved for an exchange) are replaced with a comparable model not to exceed the original unit’s purchase price. Any difference in price between the two models is lost. Additionally, in the event that no comparable model is available, our stores reserve the right to issue a gift card for the fair market value of the original product.
I hope this helps you out, but please let me know if you have any additional questions. You can send me a private message by signing into the forums and then clicking on either my signature below or the letter icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
